Daren James Pleets Obituary (1961

Daren James Pleets, 54, Fort Yates, North Dakota, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at his home. Rosary services will be held on Wednesday, March 2nd at 7pm at St. Peter's Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 3rd 2016, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates with Brother George Maufort officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Fort Yates. Daren was born August 15, 1961, at Fort Yates, to LaVerne and Shirley (Painte) Pleets. He was raised in Fort Yates, where he graduated from high school in 1979. After high school he attended Oklahoma Baptist University where he earned 60 credits hours in Education. Then in 1982, inspired by his grandpa Herbert Buffalo Boy, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served as Mortar Man and earned Rifle Marksman Badge and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1984. Upon returning home to Standing Rock, Daren earned Business Administration/Tribal Management Degree at Sitting Bull College. He took pride in his education earning him a 3.99 GPA. He also had a 25-year career in Sports Officiating as an Independent and High School basketball referee, and was huge fan of Oklahoma University Sooners and Standing Rock Warriors basketball. Within those years, he worked various jobs with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Daren was a very smart man. He enjoyed being around his friends and family. He was a hard worker and dedicated to the Standing Rock Tribe. He helped many people around him who needed food, shelter and a place to be comfortable. He had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed to laugh and tease. He took pride in his Marine Corps brotherhood and would not hesitate to help his family and friends at any time. He created so many fun and lasting memories. He is survived by three daughters, Samantha Pleets, Savannah Pleets, Francesca Pleets; three sons, Boyd Bradley Pleets, Jim Ray Pleets, Dennis Lavern Pleets; sister, Monique Pleets; brothers, Jerry Pleets and Jeff Pleets; numerous grandchildren, friends and relatives.
