EDWIN E. SEIDEL, 80, Washburn, North Dakota, left his earthly home on Saturday, August 13, 2016, in Bismarck, North Dakota, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, August 19, 2016, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck. Ed requested that Pastor John Berglund, his son-in-law, officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 AM at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan, North Dakota.
Ed was born September 1, 1935, to Carl and Antonia (Oster) Seidel in Dodge, North Dakota, where he was raised and educated in Dodge. Ed served in the United States Army reaching the rank of Sergeant while in Korea. He was active in the American Veterans Post #9 where he gathered with family and friends every Saturday at 11:00 AM.
On August 27, 1956, he married Ruth Unruh, and to this union Linda, Jim, Deborah, and Betty were born. On January 6, 1973, he married Anna Goldade and to this union Maresa and Carla were born. On May 26, 1990, he married Nyla Kroh.
Ed was happiest when he was working hard. He had a variety of jobs throughout his life. He was a weather man on KQDY radio in Minot, North Dakota, the manager of the New Salem Co-op Store in New Salem, North Dakota, and worked for various car dealers in the Bismarck area and won several top sales awards. He and his wife, Anna, owned and operated the Hi-Way Motel and Main Auto Sales. He retired in 2000 and moved to Washburn, North Dakota, where he purchased a home and remodeled it, and often stated "I'm in heaven up here". Ed loved working in his garden and tending to all of his flowers. He always made sure to share the fresh produce and his wonderful pickles with family and friends. It was there that he built the cannon he was so proud of with the help of his brother, Norman. Passersby sometimes would stop to take photos of it. He was always working on one of his cars and was an excellent mechanic.
Ed loved children and would never attend church without a pocket full of candy for them. Even though he was so ill when his great-grandson, Tai, came to visit all the way from Thailand, he had a smile for him. He also had a fondness for animals and has said goodbye to many furry friends through his lifetime. His latest pet was "Rabbit" a wild bunny that kept him company while working out in the yard over the past three years. He loved gathering with friends and family and his sense of humor kept things lively. Ed was always willing to share his thoughts on current world events and politics. His favorite dish to bring to family events was his excellent German potato salad.
Blessed to have shared his life are his five daughters, Linda (Duane Schuh) Seidel, Carla (Jascon) Rundquist, all of Bismarck, Deborah (John) Berglund, Waukee, Iowa, Betty Olson, Lincoln, North Dakota, and Maresa (Alan) Leno, Fargo, North Dakota; one son, Jim (Kathy), Golden, Colorado; three sisters, Jean Swanson, Loretta (Harry "Bud") Reamann, all of Braddock, North Dakota, and Carol Holsti, Rapid City, South Dakota; one brother, Norman Seidel, Riverdale, North Dakota; nine grandchildren, Jon (Linda), Andrew, Lisa (Zach), Nancy (John), Trent, Mandy (Kevin), Mitchell (Chatsiri), Levi and Brienna; eleven great-grandchildren, Logan, Amelia, Jackson, Emma, Abby, Odin, Riley, Charlotte, Savannah, Lilyanna, and Tai; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and his long-time companion, Nyla.
