Emerson D. Red Stone Obituary (1950

Emerson David Red Stone, 64, Cannon Ball, North Dakota, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014, at his home after a long illness. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 4, 2014, in the Youth Activity Center, Cannon Ball, with Rev. Antoine American Horse, Jr. officiating. A Wake Service begins at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, September 3, 2014, in the Youth Activity Center, Cannon Ball. Burial will be at his home in Cannon Ball, North Dakota. Emerson was born July 26, 1950, at Porcupine, North Dakota, to Melvin and Christine (Cottonwood) Red Stone. He was raised in Porcupine, and was educated in Fort Yates, North Dakota and Pierre, South Dakota. Emerson was in the Job Corps in Bismarck, North Dakota. He earned his certificate as a nurse's aide and then studied auto mechanics at United Tribes in Bismarck. Emerson married Jeanette Owns Pipe on November 22, 1972, and together they had eight children. He and Jeanette lived for a time in Denver, Colorado before returning to Cannon Ball where they lived until his death. Emerson was a talented mechanic and loved working on cars, and for years that is what he did until he became too weak to continue. Emerson's other love was music. He spent hours recording and listening to music; gospel and country were his favorites and he especially loved listening to Native American performers. Emerson loved his family, especially his grandchildren. Emerson raised five of his grandsons; David, Lawrence, Gerald, LaMont, and Quincy and his granddaughter Kaelani, who accompanied him to dialysis three times a week. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Jeanette, adopted mother Angeline Iron Road, his children Tracy (Adella) Red Stone, Bismarck, Melinda Red Stone, Gale (Mike) Joshua, Clarice Long Feather, and Maureen Red Stone, all of Cannon Ball, and Colinda Red Stone, McLaughlin, South Dakota, adopted sons Ira Plenty Chief and Monte Magilke, and adopted daughters, Wanda Miner and Jolinda Baker, both of Cannon Ball; brother Joe (Glenda) Cottonwood, sisters Delores Lester, Cannon Ball, Darlene (Virgil Taken Alive) Situran, Little Eagle, Greta Baker, Fort Yates, Johnelle White Eagle, Solen, LaVene Redstone, Fort Yates, and adopted sister Earlotta Standing Bear, Cannon Ball. Emerson and Jeanette are the proud grandparents of 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Emerson was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Christine, maternal grandparents, Asa and Gertrude Cottonwood, paternal grandparents Asa and Susan Red Stone, his sons Brian Red Stone and Joey Red Stone, grandson Lawrence Red Stone, brother Dale Red Stone, and sisters Elwin and Almeda Red Stone.
