Jerold Grant Hoirup Obituary (1938

Jerold Hoirup, 76, Bismarck, North Dakota, loving father, avid outdoorsman, tinkerer, and photographer, passed away Friday, May 8, 2015, at his home. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 14, 2015, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan, with Chaplain Sam Saylor officiating. There will be a gathering of friends and family one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Jerold was born October 6, 1938, on the family farm near Wishek, North Dakota, to Karl and Hazel (Link) Hoirup. His family moved to central Washington State where he grew up among the orchards, and graduated from Natchez High School, Natchez, Washington. He joined the Washington National Guard during high school, and after graduation, joined the US Navy where he served a tour of duty in Cuba. Following his service, he returned to North Dakota and joined the Bismarck Police Department, rising through the ranks over a 30 year career to become Lieutenant. He married Garda Weekes on December 29, 1984. Jerold was a lifetime member of the North Dakota Peace Officers Association, AMVETS, the Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and VFW. He is survived by his wife, Garda; his daughters, Kari (Daniel) Hou, Moraga, California, and Melanie (Luke) Burns, Minneapolis, Minnesota; stepson, Cody (Sarah) Cannon, Grand Forks; as well as grandchildren, Karl and Shaun Hou, Garrett and Grant Burns, and Anna and Claire Cannon. Jerold was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Hazel Hoirup, sister Agnes (Dale) Anderson; brother, Larry Hoirup; and brother-in-law and dear friend, Jeffrey Weekes Sr.
