Magdaline M. Balkowitsch Obituary (1919

Magdaline M. Balkowitsch, 98, Bismarck, North Dakota, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Prospera Community-Augusta Place, Bismarck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Deacon Tony Glatt officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 5 - 7 PM, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 with a Prayer/Rosary service beginning at 7:00 PM, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Magdaline was born May 27, 1919, to Nick and Celestina (Leingang) Hatzenbuhler at Solen, North Dakota, where she was raised and educated. She married Robert "Bob" Balkowitsch on November 28, 1939. They moved to Golden, Colorado to be part owners of the Golden Motel. Robert died in Golden, Colorado on November 14, 1970. Magdaline moved back to Bismarck in 1971, and began working as a bartender at the Elbow Room, Main Bar, and Patterson Bar. She worked until her late 60's. She then worked at the Emmaus and Diocese of Bismarck until retiring in 1994. She lived at the Paterson Place until 2010, when she moved into the Good Samaritan Society of Bismarck, until her death. She loved her family and friends, and enjoyed bowling and dancing. She believed in love, honesty, and fairness. She is survived by her son, Robert (Arlean), Balkowitsch, Bismarck; two daughters, Roberta Daniels, Tacoma, Washington and Charlotte (Tom) Huber, Bismarck; one sister, Caroline Kuntz; sister-in-law, Florence Hatzenbuhler; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Magdaline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert; sons, Quentin and Peter; three brothers, Anton (Louise), Jacob (Frances) and John; three sisters, Rose (Tony) Geiss, Betty (Tony) Kautzman and Irene (Lawrence) Glasser; one son-in-law, Doug Daniels; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alphonse Kuntz, John and Leo Balkowitsch, Agnes Emil, and Margaret Thill.
