Mary "Ste Sta Ka Ta" Bateman Obituary (1918 - 2020)

Mary Bateman, "Ste Sta Ka Ta", (Yellow Corn Woman), 101, Bismarck, passed away April 20, 2020 at a local care center. Mass of Christian Burial will be private family. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, White Shield, North Dakota. Mary was born August 14, 1918 at Nishu, ND, to Clair and Fanny (Sitting Bear) Everett. She was raised and educated in Fort Berthold and Bismarck at the Indian Girls School. She married Jackson D. Ripley, in 1932. Mary worked as an LPN in Sacramento, CA, Long Beach, CA and Bismarck, retiring in 1982. She married Paul Bateman, at Sacramento, CA. Mary was involved in three musical groups, St. Mary's Choir, English Singer at Senior Center and Senior Center Swing Band. She enjoyed ceramics and line dancing. She also volunteered at Enable with the Senior Companion Program, where she cared for people with diabetes in group homes. She stayed involved in Bible study at St. Mary's. She is survived by two daughters, Isabelle (Jim) Medchill, Colorado Springs, CO, and Kathryn (Rodney) Froelich, Selfridge, ND; son, David (JoAnn) Ripley, Belcourt, ND; grandchildren, Lisa Medchill, Kimberly Medchill (Peter Langston), Denise (Larry) DeShane, Joy Ann Froelich, Jo Lynn (Zane) Rising Sun, Lance (Sunshine) Froelich, Chase (Sara) Froelich, Daniel (Renea) Ripley, Jackson (Liz) Ripley, and Margaret Scott; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends. Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, Jackson Ripley and Paul Bateman; her parents; sisters, Agnes Fox and Jesse Young Bird; and brothers, Theodore (Betty) Everett, Hugh (Irene) Everett, and Lloyd (Melphine) Everett.
