Mary Kavaney

Mary Kavaney, 85, of Bismarck, ND passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, at Missouri Slope Nursing Center, Bismarck, ND. Funeral Services with hour before visitation on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 1:00 pm.

Mary was born in Bismarck, ND, to Margaret (Bates) Sell and Louis Spencer Sell. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1958. In1961, she married Burdette Calkins, and they had one child together, Craig Calkins. They eventually divorced in 1975.

Mary spent many years working in the ND Motor Carriers Office in Bismarck. Mary met Jack Kavaney, and they married in 1981. Although she was mostly a stay-at-home mom, she would spend time in the family real estate business doing secretarial work.

She enjoyed her time at their Missouri River cabin and later at their home in Riverdale, ND. Both Mary and Jack enjoyed their tine socializing at local Bismarck locations and had many friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Jack Kavaney; parents Spencer & Margaret Sell and her sister Susan Anderson.

Mary is survived by her son Craig Calkins of Bismarck ND; two sisters, Nancy Schonberger (Richard) and Judie Shirley (Robb) of Seattle Washington: niece & nephews Paige Thompson of Circle Pines MN, Todd Shirley of Seattle WA and Steve & Clay Schonberger of Seattle WA.
