Mandan, North Dakota

Tom Elgaen, 75, passed away September 19, 2025. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, September 26, 2025, at DaWise-Perry Mandan Crematory, 4211 Old Red Trail, Mandan, North Dakota Family and friends will gather an hour prior to the service.

We are gathered here today, not to mourn, but to celebrate the vivacious spirit of a man whose life was as vibrant and varied as a jigsaw puzzle - a fitting metaphor for a man who loved them. Born on November 3rd, 1949 in Devils Lake, North Dakota, Tom Roger Elgaen lived his life with a wit and humor that could brighten even the cloudiest of days. His stories were captivating, and his ability to support those he loved, unwavering.

Tom was a highwayman in his own unique way, working as a lead at the North Dakota Department of Transportation Highway Department. He was a man of many talents - a puzzle solver, a bird watcher, a college sports enthusiast, and a nature lover. He even had a knack for building machinery, demonstrating his strong, spirited character. In 2006, he was honored as the Snowfighters Roadeo Devils Lake District Grand Champion, a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Devoted to his family, Tom found his greatest joy in his children and grandchildren. He was a loving father to Tom Paul, Patrina, Joshua, Michael, and Montel, and an adoring grandfather to Kassie, Taiten, Grace, Mara, and Jeremiah. His wit and wisdom will continue to shine through them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Norma Elgaen. As Mark Twain once said, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started." And Tom, with his funny, supportive, and spirited nature, certainly got a head start in leaving a lasting legacy.

Tom was a man who truly understood the essence of life, a testament to his deep faith in the Lord. He was always there to lend a helping hand, a trait that endeared him to all who knew him. In the words of Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile," and Tom's life was certainly worthwhile.

We invite everyone who knew Tom to share their memories of him and upload photos to his memorial page. Let us remember him not for his passing, but for the joy and laughter he brought into our lives. Let's celebrate Tom Elgaen, a man who truly lived his life to the fullest.
